A lot of Linux systems will automount a usb drive. I recently had to 
work on a system in India that wouldn't and didn't have an internet 
connection. What I finally figured out was to run (as root)

fdisk -l

before putting the drive in and after. The usb drive was the difference 
in output. The mount instructions in the link should work then. The fly 
in the ointment on the system I was working on was the device name 
changed if the drive was unmounted and removed then put back in without 
a reboot in between. i.e. /dev/sdc1, /dev/sdd1, /dev/sde1 ...
