Michael,

The DSS image linked from the ASAS page shows this star as a 
not-quite-resolved pair. Perhaps *both* of them are variable and 
we're seeing blended lightcurves with our various widefield surveys?

Known "paired variables" might be useful for comparison. For example:
  Mira + VZ Cet
  RS Cen + RY Car (too far south for Tom's cameras)
  BM Ori + V1016 Ori (the Trapezium eclipsers)

No doubt there are other examples around the sky.
