hi Chris,

dns is returning a numeric address, but a traceroute test doesn't reach
Tom's location, stoping at a 209.165.97.36 gigabit ethernet port in
chicago.ne.earthlink.net.  (dns says Tom's machine is at 66.32.215.229)

so it's likely that Tom's boxes are up, but there's a router down in
the path to get there.
