Yeah, I don't think photometric quality is that dependent on a "good" 
night. However, I do think good transformation coefficients do depend 
on good nights. Brian's post with suggestions about how you guys do 
your photometry comes to mind. If you did all-sky transformation 
coefficients on the good nights, averaged them on many nights, you 
could get transforms that you use on all stars on all nights.

I think what you are doing now has tremendous value but the "something 
else going on", IMHO, is a result of doing separate transforms for 
every image.
