I've done that before. When it happened to me, the dead disk was corrupt
enough not to allow linux to boot, so placing it as a slave and installing
onto a new drive allowed me to copy the important data files over before
ditching the old drive.

At one of my previous jobs I did have a drive go down in a 3-disk stripe
set under NT. It ended up costing them 13,000 UKP just to get the
MS-Exchange database off that set, as the drive's heads had physically
stuck to the surface.
